Investing in an effective waste removal system for a business such as a restaurant is essential to maintaining a good plumbing system. Also referred to as grease recovery devices, Grease Interceptors are plumbing devices that trap hair, grease, lint, grease, oils, and fats, and stop them from getting into the plumbing system and creating clogs.

Normally located behind a building, the interceptor generally contains two compartments where there is a fitting between the two that carries the water from one compartment to the other. The interceptor allows the waste water to cool so the grease and other material can thicken and come up to the surface where it builds up until the interceptor is cleaned. This helps prevent a sewer line back up which can be a messy and expensive experience.

There are a number of places where you can find grease interceptors such as in restaurants, hospitals, schools, meat processing plants, cafeterias, hospitals, and other places where there is a lot of grease, fat, oil, and substance accumulation. When they are installed, they are connected to draining systems for sinks, dishwashers, floor drains…etc. Basically, grease interceptors are connected to any drainage system that carries matter that can damage the system.

Grease interceptors are normally used where there is large amount of waste that can damage a drainage system. Grease traps are often used for businesses or organizations that have a small amount of grease output. Hair and lint interceptors can often be found in such businesses as hair salons, dormitories, and smaller motels.

When waste water contains grease, oil, fats, and other material, they cannot be broken down adequately enough by the microorganisms in the anaerobic digestion process. This leads to a thickening and hardening of the substance which can block a drainage system. It will eventually harden in a septic tank and cause serious damage. A grease interceptor prevents this from happening which will save a business a lot of money in repair bills and even possibly the cost of replacing a septic tank. They are designed to capture fats, oils, grease, and solids before they penetrate a wastewater system and damage it.

There are a few different types of grease interceptors. There are units that fit inside 50 gallon tanks and there are bigger units that that are in large in ground tanks which are normally about 1000 gallons. The larger units are designed for a high volume of waste. There are also ‘stainless steel filtration grease trap under sink’ units. These units are boxes that are located within the drain where the waste water flows between the sinks and the sewer system. As well, there are devices called ‘Automatic Grease Removal Units’ that utilize mechanical skimmers to take away the surface grease when it becomes trapped.

It is essential for any business that has grease, oil, fat, and other matter flowing into their plumbing systems, to have a grease interceptor. Without it, you will likely take a significant financial hit for the cost of fixing or replacing a damaged septic system.

Author Resource:

Wastewater treatment neutralizes septic sewage, consuming contaminants, releasing just air and clear, odorless water. Grease interceptors are also a great investment; they’re perfect for solving clogging problems.
