With the integration of the internet into our lives, from music to movies to shopping to ticketing to news to the weather, graphic design has emerged as an increasingly viable field of work. Graphic design, which generally implies the creation or creative alteration of logos, motifs and other kinds of images, has come to be an increasingly demanding field that requires innovative, proficient and talented professionals. Increase in the general demand of graphic design jobs has also led to the increase in the demand of graphic design freelancing professionals. This has emerged as collateral to the burgeoning of web design, development, and maintenance.

Any organization thinking of expanding on to the medium of the internet, or any new organization, or even an established institution present on the internet looking to update their site to the latest trends need graphic designers along with web developers. They search for graphic designers with a good record of accomplishment and reasonable prices. The graphic designees, on the other hand, get flexibility in terms of the contract, as well as in terms of the project they get to work on.

The graphic design freelancer and their clients communicate via freelance forums on the net where the clients post their project outlines and the graphic design freelancers then contact them with their records of accomplishment and prices. This makes for a competitive atmosphere as well as a ripe place for frauds to breed. However, as the job requirements are strict such as experience and proficiency in graphic design, familiarity with web based protocols, digital image transformation practices, and out of the box creativity frauds generally are weeded out of the system.

As with any freelance job, graphic designers also work on a contract basis, thereby avoiding fixed timings, office harangues and the other by products of office life. They get flexibility and freedom in the kind of projects they do and do not have to be dictated around by seniors on how to do their jobs. They get the opportunity to interact directly with their clients and cater to the clients needs more efficiently.

However, freelancing can suffer whenever there is a slump in the market, leading to a lowering of the payments received per project. In addition, in the long run, freelancing jobs do not offer medical benefits, bonuses, and other perquisites that come along with a salaried job. Not to mention that the graphic design freelancers have to compete with many others like themselves in the market for every contract leading to a highly competitive atmosphere in which only the hardy and the street smart can survive.

Furthermore, in the freelance market, the professionals have to be on the constant lookout for contracts to come up to a figure that is comparable to the salary offered in web development and designing firms, especially if they are beginners. Freelancing obviously has certain caveats associated with it compared to a regular, salaried job in a firm but a freelancer has to put certain things higher on the priority scale, such as freedom of creativity and expression, flexibility of timings, and the freedom to take up projects as one chooses.
