Fiat Group of Company’s founder Enzo Ferrari built the Ferrari Enzo car in the year 2002 using Formula One technology. Ferrari Enzo consists of a twelve cylinder engine berlinetta. Berlinetta is a coupe model of a car which is entirely sporty. The Formula One technology built this car with carbon fiber body and electro hydraulic shift transmission that would be of F1 style. Active traction control and aerodynamics are the other technologies that are not allowed in the F1 but are a part of Ferrari Enzo. This is what truly sets the Enzo apart from other sports cars in its class.
The engine type of this car is V12 which is one of the first engines of a new generation for Ferrari. Paris Motor Show was where the Ferrari Enzo was first showcased at. With the basic price of about US $ 643,330, only a limited number of 349 cars were released initially. It is interesting to note that all the cars were sold in a similar fashion even before the production began. Later, fifty more cars were built after a number of requests were received to Ferrari. The 400th Enzo was built by Ferrari to benefit the survivors of the Tsunami in the year 2004. It was sold for double the usual price for US $ 1,275,230. At any given auction, the Enzo Ferrari in general trades above US $ 1,000,000. M1, M2 and M3 were three sample ‘mules’ that were built in the year 2000.
The engine that has been used for Ferrari Enzo is 6.0 L V12. This engine contains four valves per cylinder and dual overhead cams with variable valve timing. It also has got a semi automatic transmission which was also called the ‘F1 gearbox’. This transmission helped control automatic shifting and clutch mechanism using paddles. The driver could also change the gears based on the LED light display situated on the steering. The F1 gearbox produced a shift time of 150 milliseconds. The time interval between changing the gears during a transmission is called as the shift time. Four wheel suspension that has push rod shock absorbers was included in the Ferrari Enzo.
The performance of the Ferrari Enzo was amazing. It could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds and before the 7th second ticked, it could reach a speed of 100 mph. The top speed of the car is over 219 mph. The mileage of the Enzo is around 12 mpg and 18 mpg on the city roads and on the highways respectively.
Based on the results the Enzo received and the huge acclamation from all over the world, Ferrari decided to use the same technology that has been used in Enzo to produce some similar cars. Therefore few Enzo based cars were released later on. Ferrari FXX, Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina, Maserati MC12, Maserati Birdcage 75th, Maserati MC12 Corsa, Ferrari Millechili and Ferrari FXX Evoluzione are few of the Enzo based cars. Some of the technology used in these cars was induced from the original Ferrari Enzo, though there were slight modification and changes in the specifications and body style to each of the cars.
