Cellulite is a very common problem around the world. Millions of women suffer from it in nearly every country. In some areas, as much as 90 of all women have a degree of cellulite on their body. But what causes cellulite? There are a lot of myths and rumors out there about the causes of cellulite and how to get rid of it. Most of them were made up my marketers for cellulite treatment companies. They spout things like toxins, circulation problems, excess water storage, etc. But are any of these true? What are the real causes of cellulite?

Cellulite first became a real issue about 30 40 years ago. This is about the time that spas invented the term “cellulite” to describe the dimpled, cottage cheese appearance that many women have on their thighs. In reality, cellulite is just normal fat. It’s not a collection of “toxins” or any special type of fatty tissue. It’s been medically proven that cellulite fat is the same as any other fat in your body. Period. What causes the dimpled appearance is when the fat bulges out between the connective tissue under the skin. Since fat is soft, it doesn’t hold the skin taught like muscle does. When there is excess fat storage and little muscle to hold it in place, it bulges out like stuffing from a mattress. This is exaggerated by the fact that the skin is thinner in this part of the body.

Cellulite is caused by a variety of factors. The most important ones to note are:

Hormones

Diet

Lack of appropriate types of exercise

Genetics

There are many others, but these are the most common. There are two important things to note when considering this list. First of all, some women who are considered thin still have cellulite. This shows you that your bodyfat percentage is not the key factor in cellulite. These women likely have little muscle mass in the lower body and probably are eating the wrong foods. This combination leads to a hormonal imbalance that can increase fat storage in the problem areas and also cause a breakdown in collagen fibers.

It’s also important to note that cellulite is getting more noticeable as time goes on. It’s a growing problem, especially in advanced parts of the world. This leads us to believe that there are hormonal influences playing a factor. This can be from a variety of causes, but most likely the wrong types of foods and a lack of the right kinds of exercise. Again, this combination will put your body in a state that feeds cellulite. To get rid of it, you’ll need to get your body back in a cellulite fighting state.

While nobody knows the exact cause of cellulite in any one person, it can generally be lumped into one of the above categories. No two women are alike, so don’t count yourself out just because you don’t fit into one of the above. Cellulite can be eliminated if you learn to fight the underlying causes, rather than covering them up with cellulite creams and other gimmicks.
