To many it may seem that the ultimate dream would be working at home. While it is certainly true that working from home can have a number of advantages, there are also a number of disadvantages as well. Being your own boss is sometimes a challenge and although you don’t have to deal with the hustle and bustle of a nine to five job, you do have to deal with many other factors that people in the normal job market simply don’t have too.
There are many disadvantages to working at home that should be considered before you decide to quit your regular job and give self employment a whirl, some of these include:
•No motivation: While it is true that your income level is never capped when you work for yourself, it is also true that there is no one that is going to motivate you to succeed except yourself. This takes a disciplined person as it is much easier to sleep until 10 am than it is to get up a 6 am and get yourself working. When you work for someone else, you have times that you are required to work and you are usually motivated by your supervisor or boss, but at the home front, there is no such person so you need to be sure you are a good self motivator.
•No benefits: Not that every nine to five job has benefits but a lot of them do and if you work at home you can rest assured that you won’t. Yes you can get your own health insurance and fund your own retirement accounts, but you have to be sure you are making enough money to sustain the business itself before you can do anything for yourself benefit wise.
•No steady pay check: One of the nice things about a nine to five job is the fact that you know every week, or every other week, you will receiving a pay check. In other words, you are paid for the time you put in. When you work from home, many times it is feast or famine and there is never any guarantee that you will see a paycheck at the end of the week. In fact there are many hours put into a home business that you may never see a dime on.
•No paid holidays: When you work from home there is no such thing as a paid holiday. To be successful in your home business you often get little to no time off, let alone time off that you are paid for. Usually when you are working from home, you only get out of it what you put into it.
•No relief of stress: When you work a regular nine to five job, at the end of the day you can go home and forget about work until the next morning. No such luck when you work from home. Since it is your business, you will be worrying about it 24 hours per day, seven days per week; there is no getting around this fact.
Working from home can be a wonderful way to earn a living, but you do have to consider that it will not be all roses and look at the bad as well as the good before you decide if it’s really what you want to do.
