It's getting close to the New Year, traditionally a time for looking back on the previous year and setting in place, some resolutions and some goals, for the future.

Everyone discusses making resolutions and goals. We laugh about the ones we put in place the year before, or the year before that. And we plan for the future. The intent is real. We actually have the will to change the way we do things. But in essence, how many of us adhere to the new resolutions? How many of us actually achieve our goals? Unfortunately too many of us fail in our goal setting. So many people remain short-changed and wanting.

But let's look at why we feel the need to set the resolutions in the first place. There is no loud tolling of bells that heralds in the New Year. There is no noticeable temperature change. The rules for living aren't altered. The only observable difference from my perspective is the new calendar that now hangs on the wall.

So, why, at the end of one year, do we all feel duty bound to try to change? What is it in the human psyche that challenges us each year to renew our goals for the future? Is it that we have an in-built need to improve on our lives from one year to the next? Perhaps we have a desire to challenge ourselves to pastures new so that others will nod their heads in approval. Maybe, just maybe, there are more of us who have an inbuilt need to grow so that we can assist others to do the same. Maybe! Whatever the reason, why is it then, that so few of us succeed in making significant, lasting alterations in our lifestyle?

The reality is that our goals are often just a little wish-washy. They lack specificity. They need honing and refinement. You see, for resolutions to work, they must be absolutely specific. They must be time-oriented, short, medium, and long-termed, and most importantly, they must also be achievable.

Until fairly recently, I was not one for establishing too many goals. Perhaps it's part of my non-specific way of behaving, but what I found out lately, and to my absolute horror, was that for me, the years have tended to slide by, one after the other, with nothing much changing in my life.

Now let's be clear about this. I am not one to be dragged off my pathway of action. If I decide to do something, I usually carry that action out. But subtly, almost by stealth, or so it seems, I have found myself nudged off what should have been a specific pathway. It's easy to make excuses for this - too busy, not being able to say no to requests that take up considerable time, or simply not having my goal visible each day. The last one, I believe, would be the one!

Just very recently I realised that ten years had elapsed since I had made plans to leave my traditional work place in order to pursue another career. We see a period of ten years as a fairly lengthy time in terms of setting and achieving our goals. The reality is that time flies! Becoming aware of this passage of time was the catalyst in my determining to start writing down my goals.

As Benjamin Ways said, "The tragedy in life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach."

You see, just by recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. There is only one set of hands in which to place your future, and that is your own.

So what will you do when that clock strikes on the hour to herald in the New Year? Will you already have forged your goals for the future? Maybe you will only be in the process of thinking about them. I challenge you to be ready. I challenge you to have them written in large print for you to engage with them daily. The time is not in the future. The time is NOW. Please don't miss it!
