Whether you want to sharpen your option trading skills or learn the basics so that you can get started trading options, there are many option education products from which you can choose. There's a lot to learn before you can even begin to trade in the options market, and your success as a trader depends on understanding both the basics of options and the technical aspects of various trading strategies. Because people learn in many different ways - and different types of lessons are more appropriate for teaching different aspects of trading - there are many different types of option education available. These are a few of the many different types of trading courses and option education that are available to those who want to learn more about trading on the options market.

Self-Paced Online or Computer Courses

The most common type of premium option education are self-paced courses, delivered either online or as a series of DVDs or CDs. You'll get a curriculum that consists of lessons to read and work though, practice exercise and tests to take at the end of each chapter. You'll work through the lessons at your own pace. There's generally no instructor and no other students. This is a good format for those who want to learn the basics of option trading and who learn well on their own. You can find a lot of the absolute basics of option education online for free, but premium courses will often cover the material more in-depth.

Seminars

There are two types of option education seminars - introductory seminars and advanced strategy seminars. The introductory seminars are aimed at beginners and are often little more than glorified sales pitches to sell an expensive trading curriculum or platform. Advanced seminars, on the other hand, are often intensive one-day training courses that focus on a specific aspect or type of strategy.

Instructor-Led Option Education

For those who learn better when there's an instructor to explain things and answer questions, instructor-led classes, either online, in person or via email, can be the best option, especially for beginning traders. These courses are often held online via conference software, and include lectures and presentations, tests and practice sessions to help you understand the basics of options trading and the various strategies you can use in trading.

Coaching/Mentoring

For intermediate to advanced traders, coaching or mentoring provides one-to-one, in-depth advice and assistance. If you opt for coaching, you'll be paired with an experienced trader who will work closely with you to help you sharpen your trading skills and give you tips and advice on how to do everything from setting up your trading platform software to how to evaluate charting software. A coaching relationship can be extremely valuable, and is usually the most expensive type of option education you can get.

Tip Sheets and Newsletters

If you want informal option education that's situation based, newsletters and tip sheets from experienced traders or trading houses can provide valuable insight into current market conditions and point out good trading strategies and options you should be looking at or considering. They're no substitute for more formal option education, especially for beginning traders, but they are a good way to learn new skills, philosophies and strategies.

The right form of option education can be invaluable. If you're looking for more information on trading and options, consider the various types of trading education available and choose the ones that work best for you.
