Two of the greatest songwriters and rock stars of all time are renowned for their nasal voices Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. They are famous, they are rich, they are much acclaimed, but they are nasal. People make fun of them and do impressions of their voices. This is not to say that they aren t talented and beloved they are! But, they both obviously never learned how to sing without sounding nasal.
Unless you plan on becoming a Bob Dylan or Tom Petty impersonator, then you need to learn singing without the nasal sound. Because the sound that a nasal voice makes is so distinct, it is best that you find a way to sing properly, by using your vocal cords, your lungs, and your diaphragm to correctly get the notes out of your body.
By taking the time to learn how to sing the right way, you will have a much longer singing life. You won t have to force the notes out through your nasal passages, and you will be better able to produce the notes that you want. Your range will be extended by using the correct techniques, and you will be able to hit high notes that you never knew you could hit.
Learning how to sing without sounding nasal can be difficult, especially for people who have been singing for a long time, but it can certainly be done. If you are in doubt as to whether or not you sing like that, record yourself and listen to your voice. If you still can t tell, ask your friends if you sound nasal to them. If you do, then you need to work on correcting your vocals. In the long run, you will be very glad that you took the time to fix this little annoying problem and corrected your technique.
Below are steps on how to improve your voice without sounding nasal:
1.Open your mouth One of the biggest things you can do to improve your sound is to open your mouth. Many singers just don t take advantage of all that they are doing right because they don t open their mouths far enough. Look in your hand mirror as you are singing. Does your mouth resemble a straight line or an egg? It should look more like an egg. You can also hold your finger up to your mouth. Your mouth should be open as far as the first joint on your index finger.
2.Control your tongue The tongue can be very problematic for a lot of singers. It pulls back in the mouth which makes the sound muffled or it sticks up in the middle of the mouth or somewhere else. Take the tip of your tongue and stick it to the back of your lower front teeth and leave it there (unless you are saying something that requires you to move it like t, l, d or n.
3.Use your breath If you read my article about breath support, then you know breath support is important. Along the same line is using enough breath. Many singers just don t use enough air as they are singing. Especially on high notes. To check you breath, place your hand right next to your mouth. Make sure that you feel a little puff of breath as you start to sing and in between each note. Also think that you are getting louder as you go up to high notes and as you are holding long notes.
