Dental Implants may not seem like they require surgery, but they do. And, Dental Implants are a two step surgery. Dental Implants are actually a simple surgery, but you must be a good candidate for dental implants to be able to have the surgery. The main health point that a dentist will look for in a good candidate for dental implants is oral health and sufficient bone for the dental implants to be anchored to. If you have receding bone or gum disease you may not be a good candidate for dental implants. However, a dentist may be able to do a treatment or series of treatment(s) to improve your bone and/or oral tissue health so that you can become a good candidate for dental implants.

Dental implants are done by a maxillofacial dentist who is specialized in his/her field of dental study and surgery. Dental implants are mostly placed where missing teeth once were. If you've had a tooth knocked out for instance you can have dental implants to replace your natural teeth or tooth. The benefit of dental implants is that dental implants function like your own teeth in that the dental implants are permanently anchored to your bone just like your natural teeth or tooth.

So, there's no taking out denture teeth and cleaning them and worrying about them falling out or causing any problems if they're not placed right. Dental implants stay in your bone and oral cavity just like natural teeth where you can brush and floss them just like your natural teeth. Dental implants help keep the bone structure of your face and oral structure whereas missing teeth often make facial muscles sag and age more quickly without the teeth structure behind the facial skin and muscles. Dental implants keep you looking young.

So, dental implants have two processes to the surgery for getting your dental implants placed. First you must meet with a maxillofacial dentist to discuss your teeth and dental implants plans. The maxillofacial dentist will determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants which may include having x-rays of your bone and teeth and determining the health of your oral tissues, etc. You'll be able to ask any questions to the maxillofacial dentist at this appointment and then schedule an appointment for the first surgery for dental implants.

This first step is the most difficult and time-consuming part of the surgery because the maxillofacial dentist will have to drill into your oral bone to make an anchor for the dental implants. Following this part of the surgery your oral bone, teeth, and oral tissues will have to heal completely before your dental implants are placed. The maxillofacial dentist will obviously use anesthesia so that you don't feel anything until you wake up from the surgery. This part of dental implants is the most time-consuming part of the surgery because of the healing process, ensuring that your oral bone is well and ready for the dental implants to be placed. Once this is done you'll go in for the second part of the surgery which will be a minor surgery for getting your dental implants placed. Obviously your maxillofacial dentist will schedule other follow-up appointments to ensure that your dental plants are the perfect fit for you.
