Abraham Lincoln - The Most Memorable President Ever?
People in the North love him, people in the South maybe not so much, but what is undeniable about Abraham Lincoln is the fact that Lincoln was one of the greatest Presidents to rule over our country. Abraham Lincoln was by no means a seasoned politician - he had lost his fair share of political races in the past and when he did manage to succeed and become the President, it was at a time when the United States was splitting in half. Though slavery was one of the fundamental issues of the Civil War, even more fundamental than that was the conversation about State's rights and what a State of the Union could or could not do. You could say that the Lincoln leadership qualities were more about bringing people together, even though what he did for several years was tear families apart.
The Emancipation Proclamation Is a Prime Example of the Lincoln Leadership Style
One of the things that Abraham Lincoln recognized was that in order to make things change within the country, he had to step forward and help to influence that change. Because of that, Lincoln's administration brought forth the Emancipation Proclamation, which was an executive order that Lincoln issued utilizing his war powers as President. Though it freed slaves, it did not compensate owners, make slaves citizens of the United States, and did not even outlaw slavery itself. It simply made them "freedmen." This is a prime example of the Lincoln leadership style because it did just enough to make the point known, but not enough to polarize the nation even more than it already was. The Proclamation, in fact, changed the note of the war from one about internal political bickering to one about slavery. This brought support from the major allies of France and England, because both had abolished slavery and supporting the Confederacy would be viewed as supporting slavery.
Abraham Lincoln Utilized Modern Security Techniques
A lot has been talked about these days as to just how far security measures should go in order to protect a nation. Since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, suspected terrorists have been placed into detention without the opportunity for trial. This is something that Abraham Lincoln set the precedent of doing, as he ordered the arrest and detention of suspected separatists without trial during the Civil War. The Abraham Lincoln leadership qualities are aggressive, protective, and concerned about the security and safety of the nation at large instead of just individual segments of the population.
Abraham Lincoln Ultimately Brought About Change
Despite his assassination, Abraham Lincoln is known for the fact that he was able to reconcile a nation together and for the 13th Amendment. The Lincoln leadership style served this country through one of its most difficult eras, and for that many of us are grateful. The United States wouldn't be what it is today without Lincoln having kept a close eye on the war effort and making sure that he was involved in everything from strategy to general selection. You could say that the Lincoln leadership style caused Abraham Lincoln to be the second founding father of our country.
