"David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals" (1 Chronicles 15:16). With his triumph over Goliath the giant, David the shepherd boy is a renowned person from Biblical history. Often, however, Christians forget that David was also a king, and as king, one of his orders was for his leaders to make good music.
These days, music is a big part of church worship. Worship and other church activities could not function properly without music. It is a medium that prepares the worshipper's heart for meeting the Lord and at the same time a venue through which the Creator may reveal himself.
Part of being a good Christian is making excellent music during worship. The thing about music is that it should seriously be considered. It is not an option that one may skip when the emotions are not right or the circumstances uncomfortable.
King David commanded his priests, the Levites, to make joyful sounds with the instruments that they have for a very good reason. Actually, they had the Ark of the Covenant in their possession. A great effort was made by the priests for them to be able to bring up the Ark of the Covenant and carry the weight on their shoulders as mentioned in a couple of Bible verses.
The thing about the ark is that it is a symbol of God and because of this, it deserves ultimate respect. Apart from making a musical offering, they should also offer themselves up to the Lord according to King David. Worship songs can never be removed from the picture when it comes to worshipping the Lord because through music, you can lift yourself up to the Lord.
When it comes to the priests, how did they offer themselves to God and what forms of music did they rely on? According to several Bible verses, the priests offered themselves in the way that has been ordered. The Holy Scriptures prescribes a way of life that Christians must follow.
When it comes to the music, since there is the Christian way of consecrating yourself to the Lord, what is the ideal type of music that you should offer to the Lord? If you will offer music to the Lord, you have to make use of more than one instrument to make it. You have to make and offer music that is extremely joyful.
The chapter in 1 Chronicles reveals that the Levites played lyres, harps and bronze cymbals. Here, the Levites played the instruments and sang along with the music. And those that performed the music were "skillful at it".
When people praise the Lord, they have to be skillful at what they are doing especially when they are doing so with music. Due to this, it is important for music played in churches to be rehearsed. The thing about Christian music these days is that a lot of the artists have gone pro especially because the right kind of music has to be made if it is for the Lord.
For a lot of Christians, worship is something that matters tremendously and this is why there is a genre for songs that play a role in this activity. Because of the way that these songs can cater to people may they be in church or not, this type of music has really become an essential part of our existence. Because the presence of God is anywhere and may be experienced anytime, God's music must be played anywhere and anytime as commanded by King David.
