Everyone has those moments where they stop and realize they can't remember the last place they left their keys, the last time they saw a friend or what their significant other was wearing last night. Without taking the effort to strengthen it, memory can be occasionally elusive and evade even the most brilliant minds. This article contains a few ways that you can strengthen your memory and memorization skills.

When trying to remember any type of information the key is repetition. The more something is repeated in your mind the more likely you are to keep it in your long term memory. For example, if you meet someone new, repeat their name in your head at least three times while looking at them.

Some people have a hard time remembering the names of people they meet. This can be inconvenient when you can't remember your new boss' name on that important first day of work! One thing that works is word association. For instance, if you meet a woman named Nancy and she's wearing a nice dress, you can tell yourself "Nancy looks fancy". That should stick in your mind every time you see her! Silly, but effective!

Have you ever put down something somewhere and then later couldn't remember where it was? In order to help your brain with memory retention try setting things down and saying aloud to yourself what you are doing, such as "I am putting the keys on the top of my dresser in my bedroom." The effort of stating the sentence aloud will help your brain to retrace that memory later when you need to find your keys.

You may have noticed that your brain isn't as sharp if you have been sitting in one place for too long. If this is the case, you should take about a 5-15 minute break each hour during your work or study session to give your mind some time to rest and relax. This will then allow your brain to absorb the information better.

A great tip for improving your memory is to avoid smoking. Among other health issues that this causes smoking will actually decrease the amount of oxygen that gets to your brain, therefore decreasing your ability to store and recall information. Many studies have been proven to back this claim up.

Make a word or phrase out of the initials of the terms you are trying to remember. A classic example is Roy G. Biv. It is made up of the first letters of the colors in the rainbow. Red, orange, yellow, blue, indigo, and violet are always there in your memory not just by name but by order as well!

A poor memory can really hamper one's life. You can forget the name of the person you met just last week, or you can even forget some of what would have been cherished memories. While everyone's capacity for memory is different, this article's advice gave various tips that will help make sure your memory is working at its own optimal level.
