Antiperspirant. In fifth grade just about every student in America will have some sort of "maturation program" where they will learn about the changes which will soon be occurring in their bodies and at the end they will be given a stick of antiperspirant. The hot and sweaty truth of it is that as children develop into teenagers they are going to start sweating more and more, and as this happens it is a really good thing to have antiperspirant on hand. For this reason antiperspirant is one of those things that will always keep selling because we need it.

Many deodorants are also antiperspirants, but that doesn't mean they are always necessarily the same thing. So what's the difference between deodorants and antiperspirant? Deodorant is designed to cover up the odor of sweat, wheres antiperspirant is intended to keep you from sweating so much.

Because everyone basically uses antiperspirant, we don't really think about it affecting it our health. However, have you actually ever considered that your antiperspirant could be bad for your health? As said before in defining antiperspirant, the goal of an antiperspirant is to keep you from sweating. It is figured that it is easier to keep the offensive sweat smell away if we just don't sweat in the first place, rather than covering it up. The problem with antiperspirant is that our bodies actually need to sweat. Sweating is the best way our bodies can cool themselves down and antiperspirants block that process from happening.

While many of us consider "antiperspirant" and deodorants to be the same thing, they actually work in very different ways. Deodorants mask the smell of sweat by neutralizing it. The chemicals in deodorant break up the bacteria which creates the smell while still allowing us to sweat. Antiperspirant on the other hand has aluminum in it. This aluminum in the antiperspirant actually blocks the pores in our armpits, keeping the sweat from leaving our bodies. For this reason, some consider antiperspirant to not just be something we put on our skin as a part of the daily hygiene routine, they consider it to be a drug, because it changes the way our body works.

For me and for most of America this may come as a surprise. We have used antiperspirant for years and never thought it might be bad for our health. I personally thought those accusing of antiperspirant of being a drug were a bit extreme. However, the truth is that antiperspirant is considered a drug and therefor as potentially dangerous to health by the government. It may come as a surprise to know that all antiperspirant is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Does this mean that you are bad or are not taking care of your health if you use antiperspirant? No. It does mean, though, that before we apply anything to our skin we should learn what it is actually doing to us, how it could affect our health, and what it's strength is. Be careful when choosing your antiperspirant or deodorant, because excessive amounts of certain ingredients, aluminum especially, can lead to health risks, even to an increased risk of cancer.
