So, you want to know about latent semantic indexing, eh? That probably means that you know that latent semantic indexing is related to search engine optimization, or SEO. Since internet marketing is driven by SEO, that means latent semantic indexing is going to be important for internet marketing as well. Which it is. Latent semantic indexing is the technical term for how a search engine determines a ranking for an article at a website. And since SEO is all about getting your website articles ranked high, you'll want to understand how latent semantic indexing works.

Indexing is essentially another term for ranking. Semantic indexing means you're doing the ranking according to semantic analysis, which is an examination of the meaning of words and terms. Latent semantic indexing includes any latent meanings of a word, the meanings that aren't always considered.

While people derive the meaning of words fairly easily, a computer has a much more difficult time. But that's what a search engine has to do to decide which articles relate to all the search terms that a user enters in to the search engine. It's hard for a computer because words can mean more than one thing.

Take the word "bed". Your first thought might be "a place to sleep" which is true. But what about "garden bed". Well, plants do sleep there, sort of, but they also live there all the time. So the "sleep" component of bed probably has no relevance in an article about gardening. "Sleep" is a latent component of the meaning of "bed" that does not apply in all cases. This is why a search engine does latent semantic indexing in order to determine all the relevant and irrelevant parts of the meaning of the words and terms in an article. A deeper technical term for this part of the process is value decomposition, as the different values of meaning to a word are broken down in order to pick out the ones that are most relevant to the current search.

So latent semantic indexing gets into some serious details when analyzing an article for a search engine. If you're doing internet marketing, what you need to know about latent semantic indexing is which words are most highly related to each other for a given topic. An article about gardening would certainly use the words planting, tomatoes, and soil. It might use "bed", but it may not help as much with the garden concept, since it's primary meaning is a place to sleep.

So if you're in charge of your SEO process, you'll need list of words that associate highly in order to maximize your latent semantic indexing. There are such lists available online, so you don't have to guess. You may have to pay for some of these lists, but they'll be a big help to your latent semantic indexing effort.
