Many more people are now choosing to have a go at making their own things, whether it’s a small cushion cover or a pair of curtains. You can easily start making something small for your home, and now is the time to start dusting off your sewing skills.

If you want to try out your sewing skills again then you want to make something which is simple in shape and which isn’t too difficult, with your practice piece be sure to use a very cheap fabric so that if you make mistakes it doesn’t matter. You can pick up cheap lining fabric which you can use as your practice fabric unless of course you have an old duvet cover that you want to throw away.

An ideal first piece to make is a cushion cover because it is a small piece and only has straight lines, you will be able to find many patterns online and you can create your own pattern template from greaseproof paper. A simple pattern is piece A 30cmx30cm plus 2cm seam so your template piece would be 32cmx32cm then pieces B and C would be 30cmx20cm plus a 2cm seam so your template pieces would be 32cmx22cm. Pieces B and C will form the back and overlap so that there is no need to sew in a zip if you are not confident with your sewing skills just yet but your cushion will still be secure. A cushion cover shouldn’t take a long time to run up on your sewing machine and once you’ve had practice with your cheap fabric and feel comfortable you can soon buy a more expensive fabric and run up a couple to use in your home.

Making home furnishing is a great way to start practicing your sewing skills or even learning them, for some people a cushion cover is the kind of thing they may have made at school. It is a big enough piece to make it worth sewing on a machine but small enough that it will not take a long time to make so that you can easily practice without worrying about finding a place to stop so that you can do other things, because you quite simply need to hem your pieces B and C then run the sewing machine around once to have completed your cushion cover.

Once you are comfortable with making up cushion covers you can choose to make something else for your home. People have started making their own curtains and blinds so that they can use the same fabric throughout their furnishings in one room. If you look online you will find that there are a wide number of different curtain fabrics and you are bound to find something that you like which is also in your price range, whether you’re looking for a pattern for your children’s bedroom or something for your kitchen you can find it all.

You can easily start saving the pennies by creating your own home furnishings whether you jazz up something you already have like reusing fabric or just adding a little embellishment. Even creating your own unique pieces for your home can help you save money, this is because if you are making cushion covers to replace some you have then you already have the cushion pad and so you won’t be paying for one like you would do if you were to pick up a cushion in a shop.

Dust off your sewing machine and practice your sewing skills, you’ll soon be on with creating something of your own!
