In the former section, Raskolnikov, the the young russian man has just come back from doing the abominable murder of the the rich old woman. While he locates no blood on his clothes and believes the police officers won't distrust him, he is later requested at the police office. To Raskolnikov's relief, the police do not question Raskolnikov concerning the murder but rather about the money he owes his landlady. Later, he faints when he hears a man mention the murder which makes a lot of the officers doubtful. He soon goes to his apartment.
At the start of the second chapter, Raskolnikov has gone back to his room. He is becoming paranoid and is considerably frightened that the police will come to his room. He is very faint-hearted and nervous. Raskolnikov briskly collects the stolen trinkets from the hiding place and chooses to go for a stretch. He has the intent of getting rid of them to remove all of evidence from the crime. Although originally desiring to throw them into the river, Raskolnikov eventually chooses to place the items beneath a rock. Raskolnikov then goes around thinking of what to do. He ends up visiting Raskolnikov's friend, another poor Russian called Razumikhin. He is affectionate, even boisterous. Razumikhin is also dirt poor like the protagoinst. Razumikhin is glad to meet Raskolnikov and cautiously examines him. He realizes that Raskolnikov is bothered and offers Raskolnikov a career. Although, Raskolnikov is in a horrible state of mind and quickly exits the scene. He soon goes back to house. Raskolnikov is completely tired because he had not received any rest the previous night. Raskolniikov dreams that the maid, Nastasya is being harshly beaten by a police officer. However, Raskolnikov wakes up and finds nastasya standing next to him with some breakfast. He is very disoriented and demands to know what is going on. She tells Raskolnikov it was all an illusion.
