Tinnitus is pulsating or rustle or similar type of noise that seems to come from the ears or head. It is not a grave problem in itself but can be a warning of an underlying ailment. Ear wax, foreign body in the external ear, as well as fluid, infection or malady of the middle ear cause tinnitus. One of the most common causes of tinnitus is destruction to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Advancing age is usually accompanied by a certain amount of hearing nerve impairment, and consequently chronic tinnitus. Nowadays, intense noise exposure is a very prevalent cause of tinnitus, and it often damages hearing as well. Unluckily, many people are unconcerned about the harmful effects of excessively echoing noise, firearms, and high intensity music. Some medications like Aspirin and the disorder of the inner ear called Meniere's Syndrome also cause tinnitus. Watch out though for more hazardous problems like brain aneurysm or brain cancer.
unluckily there is no drug yet for tinnitus. Doctors may propose ways to lessen its severity like hearing aids, wearable sound generators for recreation and sleep, acoustic neural stimulation, cochlear implants, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, some may recommend Niacin or Gabapentin.
If there is no cure, then at least there are some remedies we can apply. This may sound uninteresting but regularly cutting down on salt and caffeine intake as well as smoking cessation may encourage. Zinc supplement, Melatonin ( a natural sleeping aid) may assist for those with disturbed sleep. Ginkgo Biloba herb is also found to be advantageous. Others may necessitate cognitive and behavioral therapies.
