The first consideration is the quality of silver you wish to buy. Pure silver is not usually a good choice for making items of jewellery, as it is very soft and malleable. It is usual for silver to be mixed with a small amount of another metal, usually copper, in order to produce what is called 925 silver, otherwise known as sterling silver. This consists of 92.5% silver, with the other 7.5% being made up of copper, giving a much tougher finish. A 925 silver chain or a sterling silver chain is a very stylish and practical accessory, as well as being of high quality and value. A sterling silver item will carry a hallmark, which can be used to identify its provenance.

An alternative to sterling silver is EPNS, or electroplated nickel silver. “Nickel Silver” itself contains no silver â€" it is made up of copper (60%), nickel (20%) and zinc (20%). The electroplating process adds a thin layer of silver to the outside of the accessory, giving it the look and feel of sterling silver. However, such items will wear over time, exposing the darkened nickel silver underneath.

The next thing to consider is the length of the chain. When deciding this, think about which clothes you will wear with the chain, and how low you would like the chain to hang. Perhaps use a piece of string or yarn to determine the right length for you. You can usually buy 18-inch, 20-inch, 22-inch or 24-inch silver chains over the counter, but any reputable jeweller should be able to create one of your desired length, whatever it may be.

You will now need to think about the style of the chain you wish to buy. If you are intending to use it to display a pendant, then you need to ensure that it is in keeping with the item. For instance, a delicate charm, maybe a rabbit’s foot or small locket, may be best suited to a delicate chain. Alternatively a larger pendant, perhaps a Maltese Cross, may work better with a heavier chain. When buying a chain to go with a pendant, remember that it is the pendant that is principally on display, and that the chain must not detract from it.

A chunky mens silver chain makes a superb gift, and is a very fashionable item. Often they are bought in conjunction with a bracelet of similar design. Don’t forget that items like this can often receive knocks when used often, so it is advisable to buy something that is made of good quality sterling silver, rather than an alloy or plated metal that will wear quickly and look tarnished.

Whether you are purchasing a chain for yourself or for your partner, you want to buy the best, as they are important showpieces. Most high street jewellers have stocks of chains, but their range will always be limited because they will be tied to a single supplier, and because of space limitations. Nowadays it is much easier to buy chains on the internet, where you can compare the various items available from many different shops, and choose the ones that are right for you. You are also more likely to find a good bargain, and you could well find yourself with a silver chain at a fraction of the price you would otherwise have paid. When buying over the internet, don’t forget that the distance buying legislation protects you and you have the right to return items if they do not meet your expectations.
