Did you know that your body absorbs about 60% of almost anything you put on it? All of those lotions, oils and sprays aren't just sitting there on the surface looking pretty. A quick look at the ingredients listing of your favorite "smelly-good" lotion might make you think twice once you consider that stuff is seeping into your body. It is for this reason that many folks have turned to using essential oil lotions and products rather than those that use chemically engineered "fragrance" oils available at the commercial retail stores.
Now many people profess essential oils to have bodily, emotional, even spiritual impacts on the people that use them. Some of these claims have been trialed and have shown to have merit, though the benefits of many oils have not been objectively evaluated and proven. It isn't entirely far-fetched to assume that inhaling or applying an essential oil to your skin could surely have health related effects. Personally, I am an eternal skeptic and would like to see more probing done before accepting the 'sage wisdom" of pre-Socratic methods of testing. You can investigate particular essential oil oils on the web and find those that are safe for skin wear but it's advisable to still spot test any essential oil lotion before soaking in the stuff. Some oils (such as citrus oils) are known to increase sensitivity to direct sunlight so be sure to use wisely.
Even if essential oils didn't have health benefits (again, many do and many more reportedly do) then you may ask... why use them? The logic behind using essential oil lotions is simple enough. When used properly, essential oils are safe and have aromas created by nature that can only be poorly replicated in the lab chemically. If there are health benefits... great! Using lotions that contain essential oils (instead of fragrance oils) avoids putting nasty chemicals into the body and instead pampers the body with ingredients derived from natural seeds, barks and fruits unadulterated by the tampering of human hands... and that to me is a much more appealing option.
Another reason that I prefer making lotions with essential oils is the fact that the contents are more relatable. When experimenting with different blends, it's not that easy to imagine how synthetic fragrance oils will blend together. What does "ocean breeze" and "apple pie" smell like blended? I have no idea. but I am able to presume what a few drops of blood orange essential oil with a couple drops of white grapefruit essential oil would smell like (it's terrific by the way). This makes for more enjoyable experimentation and I have made many essential oil lotion recipes by simply imagining the results and playing with it.
So there you have it. Essential oil lotions and products provide a safer, more natural alternative to big box personal care items and many offer health related benefits also. Oils can be mixed to create "blends" that target a wide range of applications and uses, making for a wonderfully scented and useful end product.
