Following the animated small, Frederator Studios pitched an Adventure Time series to Nickelodeon, but the network given to it twice. The studio then greeted Cartoon Network, with creator Pendleton Ward delivering them first storyboard for "The Enchiridion", showing that the premise might be expanded into a collection while maintaining elements on the original short: funny catchphrases and dances, an awkward kiss moment when using the princess and an "Abe Lincoln moment". Cartoon Network greenlit the best season in September 2008, and "The Enchiridion" became the 1st episode. According to Ward, the show's style was influenced by his time frame at CalArts and his work like a storyboard artist on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. He tries to contain "beautiful" moments like all those in Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro and several subversive humor, inspired by series including the Simpsons and Pee-wee's Playhouse. Executive producer Fred Seibert even comes close the show's animation style to the next of Felix the Cat as well as the Max Fleischer cartoons although says its world is likewise equally inspired by Dungeons and Dragons and video games. Ward intends the show's world to get a certain physical logic instead of "cartoony slapstick" - while magic exists in situation, the show's writers try to create an internal consistency in the way the characters interact with the globe.
Many of the series' writers and storyboard artists use a background in indie comics. Ward characterizes them as "really smart, smartypants people" responsible for introducing weirder even more spiritual ideas into that series during its next season.
