The human head louse is a true parasite. These puny parasites feed on human blood sucked from the scalp, and will not live for long if removed from their breeding grounds. If you want to get rid of lice from your hair must know how to check for lice.

Head lice find new 'colonies' through physical contact. Due to the way an infestation is perpetuated, children are often more susceptible to become infested. Lice bites can cause a range of problems on skin, such as infections, itchiness and rashes, although these determined little pests do not usually spread any threatening diseases.

Checking for hair lice using a magnifying glass is a simple method of detecting and managing an infestation. The first step is to segment the hair into small areas, next, check each segment of hair slowly and carefully with the magnifying glass. Before you begin, move to a room with adequate lighting. It should be easier to identify lice in a bright room.

The first sections of hair you check should be the back, from the hairline up. Part hair into smaller sections, starting from the crown, and check for lice and nits (lice eggs) using a magnifying glass and a bright light source. Lice inhabit the scalp whereas nits are found attached to hair shafts. Nits, which look like small, pale specks on hair, will be firmly attached to hair shafts and may be removed only by scraping off with fingernails.

When you have inspected the back for lice and nits with a magnifying glass, segment clumps of hair into small sections either to the left or right of the original parting. Use the magnifying glass and a powerful light source to check each side meticulously. Look closely for lice and nits along individual hair strands and the scalp. Continue until you cover the whole back of the head. With the back of the head checked, start checking the front areas. Repeat the checking process on the front.

If lice or nits are present, treat the problem as soon as possible. First, thoroughly clean bedroom fabrics such as bedding and bedsheets and items of clothing to eliminate the infestation from areas you frequently occupy. After removing stray lice from your clothes and bedding, rely on a regimen of anti-lice measures, such as using anti-lice products. In some cases, the infestation may may call for different kinds of treatment options, to be eliminated completely. Another thing to note is that, if one family member has a lice problem, you should check everyone as lice are known to thrive in group settings. That's why it's so crucial to understand how to check for lice in different hair types.
