Video games and movies are very popular, but they both have something in common: they rely on electricity. The same goes for the DVD players, Blu Ray players, and HDTVs. Yes, they are very nice to have and many people want them, but there’s huge expense and added complications in procuring them. But there is one present you can buy this year that will stand out from the other, and that is the gift of a humble book.
A book will work even when the power goes out, and it will stand the test of time. Think about it, there are books around right now that were written hundreds of years ago. Though the method of writing books has changed significantly with the advent of the printing press, their purpose has remained exactly the same. But what kind of books should you get? There are a few that come to mind right now actually.
Fiction: There are so many choices right now when it comes to fiction books, but right now there are two major standouts. As usual, Twilight is the best runner up. The story of a vampire and his human lover Bella as they push their way through everyday life, including high school, angry parents, and an all out war that is brought right to their doorstep. The four books in this series provide an adventure beyond imagining, and one that you will not soon forget. It has also been made into a huge movie blockbuster, with the second of the four book series – New Moon – recently released to much pomp and ceremony. So to get them one step ahead, you might want to get the rest of the series, or the whole set in one fell swoop.
If you are looking for something with a softer edge, then you might give the Harry Potter series a try. Welcome to the magical world of a young boy who is informed that he comes from a magical family that practices witchcraft and wizardry. Follow him from his meager beginnings as a child apprentice, to his adult years as he tries to vanquish the evil Lord Voldemort once and for all. Again this has been a hugely successful book and film, with adults and children alike all being drawn into the world of Hogwarts.
Non Fiction: There are some that would like a story, but they don t want it to be made up. In that case, a little history will probably do the truck. With the book Imperial Cruise you can follow the story of a secret voyage to the far side of the world. It was a voyage that would change our world, sparking several wars including the infamous World War II.
Of course you may also have those that do not enjoy reading a story at all, and this is perfectly fine. These people might enjoy How To books or even recipe books. It might not seem like much, but there are people that just love doing things with their hands, and you will find that these books may be exactly what they were needing.
If you are unsure of where to start your search, check both the online bookstores as well as retail stores anywhere. Books are an inexpensive way of letting someone know that you care, and it is a gift that they will be able to enjoy for years to come. It’s a very personal thing and shows you understand their interests and will bring them joy for some time to come.
