Effective interior design can make even the smallest room seem more spacious. With a little ingenuity and a couple of tricks of the trade, you can make a room that once seemed cramped and crowed appear to be spacious and grand.
Short of demolition and creating actual space in a home or room, the next best thing that you can do is adhere to a few simple interior design rules. Following these rules are actually rather simple and much less expensive than hiring a contractor to add 100 square feet to your living room.
Dark rooms will always seem smaller than they actually are. Lighten things up with some good lighting and let the light shine in from any and every available window. The added affect of being able to see outdoors can also enhance the effect.
Light colors can also make a room seem larger. Darkly painted walls and decor can make you feel like the walls are closing in on you in a small room and dark furniture can also break up a room and make it feel smaller than it actually is. If you want to skip buying new furniture, a covering or some light colored blankets or throws can minumize this affect until the day does come to buy new furniture for this room.
Clutter is probably one of the biggest sins that most of us are guilty of. A cluttered space filled with more furniture than is necessary along with tables filled with knick-nacks can distract the eye and overwhelm a room. Store as many things as possible and remove any unnecessary furniture that is just taking up space. If you have children, try to keep the toys and games picked up or choose one room that becomes their storage area for all the things that kids love to play with.
Try moving your furniture around and seeing if a new arrangement might help to give the appearance of space. Often we arrange furniture without much thought but there is always more than one way to skin a cat and more than one way to arrange a room. Experiment and try something crazy like placing a couch in a corner or hiding furniture on the entrance wall of a room so it isn't apparent that it's there when you intially look into a room. You can always move the furniture back but trying something new might give you a better feel for what will work in your rooms.
While these are only a few interior design tricks that can help you to make your small rooms seem grand, it might be a step in the right direction. If you're tired of feeling cramped in your home, try some of these interior design tips and see if you don't see a difference.
