In Piazza, above the Piazza Del Campo, lies the Duomo in Siena. This is great gothic building filled with treasures by Pisano, Donatello and Michelangelo and Frescoes by Pinturicchio.
This building has an impressive exterior that was built between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. The cathedral is in the form of Latin Cross with a slight projecting dome and bell structure. Both the exteriors and interiors are decorated in white and greenish black marble in altering stripes, with black and white as symbolic colors of Siena.
You may love to go in but you will certainly give a second thought when you have to pay 10 euros for an entry pass. The pass is valid for three days and gets you to cathedral, baptistery, crypt and opera museum. The interior of Siena cathedral is Spartan kind. When you enter it, you don't know where to look at. The white black marbles continue all the way. While If you look up, you see a bust of past religious men of Siena. But if you look at the floor. The most beautiful and impressive part of the cathedral is the pavement that is decorated with art of mosaics to create story telling masterpieces.
The 56 etched and inlaid marble panels were designed by 40 leading artists between 1369 and 1547. Except for Bernardino Di Betto, who was from Umbrian, all others were from Siena. These mosaic panels are now nave and aisles and are placed in barriers for restricting passage. The most precious ones are under the apse and in transepts that are protected by special flooring. These are only uncovered in honor of palio or for a cuple of months often September and October.
In duomo's center, the floor panel that is usually kept visible is in the left transept – the Matteo di Giovanni's Fantastic 1481 Massacre of Innocentes. The oldest of all designs is in the centre wall near the entrance – wheel of fortune and Seinese wolf surrounded by Symbols of allied cities. These date back to 1369 and have been continuously maintained and adorned over centuries. Some of their parts are worn out. Each panel ahs its own story. What ever that has been mentioned here is just a brief description in words. The real joy is in practically watching them and for that you need to visit Siena.
