A radical innovation in cosmetic and orthodontic dentistry is the new Invisalign treatment that is a special alternative to traditional looking braces. Many people are self conscious about wearing braces, which typically look quite conspicuous with their flashing metal hardware. But with the advent of the all new Invisalign system it is possible to get the same kinds of benefits and alignment results from a kind of orthodontic hardware that is almost invisible – which is how the special system got its name.
The Invisalign treatment procedure has many versatile applications for those seeking orthodontic help. They can be successfully used, for example, to cure problems of overcrowded teeth which happens when there is not enough room for all the teeth to grow alongside one another with adequate spacing across the jaw. Not only can this condition be unsightly, it can also create discomfort and lead to more cavities because it is harder to clean out food trapped between the teeth. Meanwhile crowded teeth also significantly enhance the chances of gum disease while potentially causing mechanical problems with proper biting and chewing.
Of course the opposite thing can also happen and create its own set of complications. When there is too much space between teeth – either because they naturally grow in that way or because teeth are lost due to a dental extraction or accident – it can likewise lead to gum disease or a less attractive smile. Another condition addressed effectively by Invisalign treatments is cross bite – which is a term used to describe teeth that do not line up correctly when you bite down but instead bite a little too far to the right or the left of the teeth above or below them. When that occurs you might accidentally rub or bite into the gums or against other teeth, wearing them down or otherwise creating abrasions that can lead to decay or deterioration. Related conditions of overbiting or underbiting – where the teeth either buck or jut out too much on the top or do not extend far enough on top and close down behind the lower teeth – are also good candidates for Invisalign system treatment remedies.
The way the Invisalign system works is that sets of aligners are created as a custom fit for your particular mouth and teeth.
As the teeth cooperate and are gradually aligned as their movement is guided into place by the system, they will naturally shift their positions in incremental ways. To make up for that change – which is a welcome and intentional shifting of the teeth in the desired manner to their new positions – a series of different Invisalign type braces is made. As each step happens and is monitored and measured by the dentist, a new set of Invisalign aligners is given to the patient to wear. So little by little over a series of steps the different sets of Invisalign fittings are used, changing them out for new ones about twice each month. After an appropriate amount of time the teeth are moved into their desired positions and the patient can permanently remove the Invisalign system.
