Shower or bathtub drain odor is a very common drain problem; nonetheless, now and then odor's causes are not so manifest ,and are therefore tougher to get rid of. If the drain is never used, then the water in the P-trap may have dried-up, allowing smelly gases to flow back into the house. This complication can be resolved by running water, ever so often, into the tub or shower. If there is mold or a dead animal on the other side of the bathroom wall, you may need to contact a professional to tear open the wall and examine the area behind it.
Another uncommon cause of shower drain odor is mold growth under the tub. In many showers and tubs, the shower drain has openings, which allows water that has seaped through the shower or tub tiles to drain into the outlet, thus preventing the buildup of moisture under the shower. Small amounts of moisture in this area are enough to support mold growth. One possible treatment is to block up the drain below the debth at which water coming from beneath the shower or tub runs into it. Then add enough bleach to fill the hollow area under the tub. Let the bleach sit until morning. The bleach application may have to be repeated periodically as after a while mold can grow off the dried residues of bleach.
