Get to know all of the people who are a part of your child's life. You need to take the time to know your child's teachers, day care workers, doctors and anyone else that may play a role in their lives. It will benefit you in many ways but it will also benefit your child by you knowing that they are in good hands.

A great tip to help you be a good parent is to never abuse drugs or alcohol. If your child sees you when you're drunk or high on drugs they'll lose a tremendous amount of respect for you. You can simply avoid this by drinking moderately and by not doing drugs.

From the day that you bring your child home from the hospital, pay attention to your tone and the words that you use when you talk. If you want your child to grow up to be a happy and kind individual, you need to model that behavior. This includes speaking nicely to your partner and giving lots of hugs and kisses to every member of your family.

If your preschooler resists going to bed, try working with him or her to develop an evening ritual. Once you've worked it out together, make a chart or picture illustrating what happens. Each night, you can use this as a guide to help your child fall asleep. If they try to demand something else, use the picture as a tool.

If you're struggling to get your child to fall asleep each night, talk to your doctor about melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that has been shown to help children with sleep problems. Your doctor will be able to advise you as to whether or not melatonin is a safe choice for your child.

If you have a child devoted to sucking their thumb, you likely want to wean them from the habit. The best way to do this is, first, to identify the situations or feelings that encourage the child to suck his or her thumb. Then, have a substitute - like a toy to cuddle - to offer them when temptation arises.

Many parents instinctively punish their children for bad behavior, and have the mistaken belief that punishment acts as an adequate deterrent for bad behavior and will encourage good behavior. While punishment does deter bad behavior, it does not necessarily mean that the child will understand why that behavior was bad, nor does it teach the child what the alternative good behavior is. It is significantly more important to communicate with the child to help them understand the differences between right and wrong than to simply punish them. They will then be able to apply the concepts to other situations and become overall better people.

It is important that when dealing with teenagers- college year children of yours to never have to hear about the money issues that may be happening your (mother and father) lives. If you can't support them they will understand and take initiative. However, if they are supported by you but still get complaints about how much they cost to you, this will ruin your relationship with them.

Be consistent about naptimes and bedtimes to help your days run smoothly. Kids thrive on routine, and skimping on the amount of sleep they get can impact their health and overall well-being. Check with your pediatrician to see how much sleep each of your children needs, and make it a priority to stick to a regular schedule as much as possible.

The above tips can't possibly cover the whole complex scope of parenting, of course, and every child is unique and deserving of individual attention -- but these tips can certainly help parents stick to the proper path for raising a beautiful child into a healthy, functional, productive adult. After all, in parenting, every correct action, however small, contributes to a child's future.
