For those of us familiar with Boxer breed of dogs, it is no mystery that they are active, friendly, and vivacious. Boxer dogs tend to develop close relationships with their owners that last. This breed is not recommended for novices, they demand that that pet owners take their care seriously, investing a good deal of time in them. Boxers are very smart, which can be helpful for teaching purposes, but not to good if used just to get their way with the owner.
It has become the status quo, that Boxers be trained for security purposes. Although most people seem to believe that they are hostile in nature, they couldn’t be further from the truth. Perhaps their general appearance gives way for a reputation as an aggressive and unfriendly dog. But with proper training, there is no danger in keeping a boxer around. This breed of dog can also be a loving and caring companion for the entire family. However, you need to determine at a rather early stage whether you want your boxer to be more of a friendly and docile type, or the aggressive night dog.
Because of the high degree of intelligence of Boxers, there might be times during training when he will refuse to anything. Not that he doesn’t understand the command, or what he is being asked to do, but rather chooses not to comply. This is the primary reason why teaching commands to a boxer needs to be started as early as 5 to 6 weeks. The owner will need to build trust and become closer to the dog in order to improve his chances of obedience.
A significant aspect of the boxer breed is that they can be very friendly in nature, but need to be taught this behavior. Learning to be around people and other dogs is not an inherited trait in them. Thus, it is a good idea to train your dog along with others to aid in his social skills.
When your dog reaches the age of one, the power struggle begins. Boxers in general will try to teach their owner who is really in command and ignore their requests. Your leadership will be put to test. The pet owner will have to be both, patient and firm. It is important to show your dog, through your attitude and tone of voice who is in command, while not taking away the love at the same time.
Make the training experience fun, which will help you improve your relationship with your dog. Some pet owners may consider joining training school in order to accomplish this task in a group atmosphere. Another option could be to hire a professional handler to do the job for you. This would take out the burden of enforcing any kind of discipline on your dog, and save some more time for fun and play. These dogs make a great addition to the family. They are friendly and love to cuddle up. Start off early with them, and you will have an even happier experience with them.
