Futons are lightweight pieces of furniture that can convert from a bed into a couch for daytime use. At night, change it back into a bed for sleeping or watching television. Futons come in different sizes, such as double and queen. Bi-fold models are simple to maneuver and can be done by one person. It is best to consult the manufacturer's operating instructions, but if they are lost or difficult to read, it is still possible to convert the futon as needed.

Converting From A Couch To A Bed
Convert from a couch to a bed. Remove all items laying on the futon, including pillows, magazines and blankets.
Clear the floor area three to four feet at the top and bottom ends of the futon couch. Leave enough room on at least one side of the couch to walk from one end to the other.
Stand in front of the futon couch in the middle. Reach down and grasp the seat frame. Gently pull up at a 45-degree angle. When its momentum stops, pull it towards you horizontally and back up as the frame unfolds and extends flat.
Set the legs down on the floor. Push back on the frame to lock it into place. If there is a locking latch or lever on the side of the futon, engage it. Not all models have one.
Add covers and pillows on top as needed.

Converting From A Couch To A Bed
Convert from a couch to a bed. Remove all covers, pillows and extra items laying on the bed.
Disengage the latch or lever, if available. Stand on the floor at the bottom end of the bed. Grasp the frame with two hands and pull straight back until it stops. Lift up and push forward until it stops.
Move to the side of the futon. Hold the bottom end of the frame in one hand and slide toward the futon back. Push down on the center crease of the futon mattress with the other, helping it fold into the couch position.
Pull forward on the seat back to make sure it is in place.
Return any pillows or other belongings to the futon couch. Put any moved furniture or items back in place.
