A garage on a home is more than just a place to cover your car and protect it from bad weather. It's a storage area, an area for projects, and an area where kids can play. If you are someone without a garage attached to your home, perhaps you are thinking of hiring a contractor to build a garage add-on. If this is the case, it's something you won't likely regret. However, before you get started on the garage project, there are a few things to consider.

The first step is determining your needs. How will you be using the garage? If you plan on parking your vehicles in the garage, determine how many cars you'd like to make room for and how much room you need for other activities. If you decide someday to buy a bigger car, like an SUV to replace a compact car, will you have enough space? Will you want a workbench? How much storage space will you need? Once you've determined a general size you'd like to have for your garage, it would be smart to find out what building codes are in your area. There may be height restrictions that will make your ideal garage size impossible.

Once you've determined the size of the garage you may want to work with a designer to come up with detailed plans for the garage. Once you have plans for a garage that works with the rest of your home, it's time to get a building permit. In most cities, you can't just build a garage without first talking to the department of urban planning to find out what kind of permits you will need. If you plan to hire a contractor, he can acquire the necessary permits.

Next, it would be wise to hire your contractor to excavate the site and build the foundation. This is one area that should never be performed by someone without experience. Hire a surveyor to precisely locate the site for your garage, mark it, and then have your contractor do the excavating to the proper depth. Once the excavating is complete, talk to a foundation expert. Since foundation will determine the structural integrity of your garage, it's best if you leave it up to an expert.

Once your foundation has been properly set, it's time to start construction! As you can see, building a garage takes preparation and conformance with proper building codes and laws. If you follow these steps, you will be able to create a great new space for your home.
