Many patients prefer a tooth-colored material, such as porcelain or resin, though, these materials are less durable when compared to gold. Tooth colored indirect fillings may be most appropriate for front teeth or areas where the inlay or only will be highly noticeable. Inlays or onlays are more durable and can withstand a greater bite force, which makes them a popular restoration option for molars.
Placing an inlay or onlay requires two steps. First, the dentist will carefully remove the damage or decay. Next, the dentist will take an impression of the area that is being treated and will place a temporary inlay or onlay to protect the interior of the prepared tooth. The dentist will then send the impression to a dental laboratory, which will create a permanent inlay or onlay from the cast. When the restoration arrives at the dentist's office, they will schedule a delivery appointment in which the inlay or only will be set into the tooth with a special bonding agent.
