Acne is a skin condition that forms underneath the skin. Therefore, washing away the oils on the surface of the skin does little to cure or prevent acne. Unfortunately, the myth that acne is caused by people who do not wash enough continues to make the rounds. While gentle washing is an important part of the process to get rid of acne, washing too much can cause more irritation of whiteheads or blackheads. Once they become infected, you will form more pimples.

When you cleanse your skin be sure that you use a gentle cleanser. There are several very good cleansers that are designed for use on skin that is having problems with acne.

Exfoliating is the process that removes the dead layer of skin cells from your face. This is an important process that should be done once or twice each week. After using the gentle cleanser, use an exfoliate with a facial scrub. Be gentle in the use of the exfoliate and do not scrub too hard to irritate the acne. Use of the exfoliate helps to reduce the dead skin cells as well as other debris that can clog your pores and cause you to have more acne.

In order to prevent more clogging of pores, your cosmetics, lotions and sunscreens need to be oil free. An oil free lotion will help to avoid dry skin. To keep from getting a sunburn, you need to use an oil free sunscreen. Be cautious of many hair products that tend to be very oily.

Products that are designed to prevent clogging of pores are called noncomedogenic. These products are very important in the process of getting rid of acne.

If you are still having problems with acne, it may be time to step treatment up a notch. There are some effective medications that contain benzoyl peroxide that are available over the counter. When using these products, choose the lowest concentration that gives you results. Begin with the lowest concentration and if you do not see results after four to six weeks, increase the strength. Be sure that the benzoyl peroxide you get is the type that was formerly only available by prescription.

If you still do not get an improvement in the condition of you skin, it is time to see a doctor. There are several medications that doctors commonly prescribe.

Retin A causes the skin to become very red and very dry. It can cause your skin to peel and should only be used at night because it increases your chance of sunburn. It sometimes takes two to three months before you see any improvement in the condition of your face, and sometimes the acne gets worse and then better.

Antibiotics are only available through a doctor s prescription. They are often helpful when your acne is swollen or red. They are also useful if other medications are not causing an improvement in your acne. Antibiotics are able to kill the bacteria that contributes to whiteheads.

Accutane is also only available by prescription. It is a pill and is used by people who s acne is likely to cause severe scaring or cannot be kept in control by any other medications. Accutane may affect you blood count, so frequent blood testing is important.

Getting rid of acne is not always easy, but you can take steps that will lessen its effects.
