Home Security For Seniors

Though age brings wisdom, it also brings its own set of challenges, many of which are not well understood by those who are not used to caring for older people. Even when assisted living or nursing home type assistance is not required, there are still a few important safety precautions for seniors, particularly those who live alone.

One of the greatest risks for seniors is a fire in the home. Decreased mobility makes escape difficult without early warning. Always install smoke alarms, and remind older relatives of the dangers of smoking or cooking at home. Smoke alarms can be connected to home security systems, which will alert the fire department when a fire is detected. Seniors should follow the same fire safety precautions as younger family members, such as having an escape route planned for emergency situations.

Elderly family members, especially those living alone, are particularly prone to break ins because they appear vulnerable. Door and window alarms can get seniors the help they need if someone is trying to break in. A security camera, or even a dummy camera, can make potential burglars think that someone is watching. Even if they know that the resident lives alone, this is a powerful theft deterrent. The homes of seniors living alone should be especially well protected using the same principles that can help younger families avoid burglaries in their homes.

To avoid slips or falls in the home, be sure that the house has appropriate safety features in place, such as no slip rugs and a bar in the shower. The bathroom is a particular area where safety features should be installed. A safe and user friendly home is the key to avoiding falls or other in home accidents. Good lighting, both indoors and out, can not only help the resident see well both at night and during the day, but also keep criminals from thinking that the home is unoccupied.

For seniors, personal alarms are invaluable. These can be activated not only when someone is breaking in to the home, but also in the case of a fall, a medical emergency, or any other situation where assistance may be required. If you have an elderly family member, placing personal alarms around the home can put your mind at ease and alleviate some of your concern at leaving your elderly relatives home alone. The alarm can also be carried or worn, both inside and outside the home.

Many seniors are mobile enough to care for themselves. Consider purchasing a canister of pepper spray for seniors looking for a way to protect themselves against purse snatchers or other criminals. Seniors, especially those lacking in mobility, often feel vulnerable in public and dependent on others for their safety. A canister of pepper spray is easy to use and can give a sense of independence and freedom.

Some older people may need to be reminded of personal safety principles when in public. For example, some senior citizens carry large amounts of cash to avoid trips to the bank. This, however, can be quite dangerous, especially if someone should spot your relative counting the cash or paying for a purchase. Most street crimes are crimes of opportunity perpetrated by criminals looking for an easy target. Unfortunately, senior citizens may be seen as an easy target in their eyes. You may also want to remind seniors to lock their doors and windows, as they may be accustomed to keeping them open, even at night or when they leave the house.

Becoming older is no reason to give up independence. Still, seniors must consider their safety, including medical emergencies, break ins, and fires, and take steps to reduce the risk of these common dangers.
