If you have ever been told that you or a family memer have a cyst, your next question may have been what causes cysts? In order to understand the answer to that question, you need to first know what a cyst is, then you can know what causes it.
A cyst is a bag or sac like structure that is somewhat like a blister. Instead of being formed in between the skin, it is inside the body. The sac may be filled with either gas, liquids or even a semi solid substance. Cysts form inside of the tissue. They can be formed anywhere inside the body, and can be of a variety of sizes. Some are so small that they must be seen under a microscope while others have been large enough to give their victim the look of term pregnancy.
In the discipline of anatomy, the term cyst can be used to refer to normal sacs found in your body, such as your bladder. However, in this article we will use the term only in reference to the abnormal growths.
Cysts are not normal parts of the tissues where they are found. They have a distinct skin like membrane called a cyst wall. If this sac has been filled with pus, it is not technically a cyst but it is an abscess.
Cysts can be caused by many factors. Some of those include: tumors, genetic conditions, infections and many other factors. Your doctor can give you a better idea of the cause behind your cyst.
While most cysts are benign, and simply caused by a duct or body outlet being plugged, others may be tumors or formed inside of a tumor. These cysts may be malignant.
If the cyst is not located deep within the body, you may be able to see its outline under the skin. Come cysts may feel very hard as the pressure of the fluid builds up in them. Other cysts may only be discovered when you have a CAT scan or an MRI.
Women may find that they have cysts formed in the mammary glands when doing a breast self exam. These types of cysts are very often painful.
If a cyst is in the brain, it may cause headaches or other symptoms.
