The skin is the largest organ of the body and the most delicate organ too. Stretch marks formation is a problem faced by many women since time immemorial. It usually occurs due to the cracking or tearing of the dermis which ids the layer of the skin. This occurs when extra pressure or force is exerted on the skin increasing its elasticity. It is commonly seen in obese people as a result of regular weight gain and loss, in pregnant women after delivery due to the expansion and contraction of the abdominal tissue and in girls during puberty as a result of hormonal changes. It is very often cursed as it spoils the beauty of the abdomen. I cannot wear that bikini anymore!! That top is too short, my marks will be revealed!! These are some common reactions.

Prevention is better than cure. There are certain precautions to be followed to prevent the appearance of stretch marks.

Stretch mark prevention creams
Collagen is essential for reducing the exertion on the skin resulting in the stretch marks. Creams containing ingredients which increase the strength of the skin, improve the collagen structure and better the elasticity of the skin are used. This product increases the flexibility of the skin, enhances cell growth and skin renewal. However it must be tested for side effects. Moisturizing creams can also do wonders on the skin. It saturates the skin and thus increases its elasticity which prevents the formation of stretch marks. Cocoa butter is commonly used for this purpose.

Avoid scratching
It is common that itching sensation may occur when the skin expands or contracts. Scratching the skin will increase the chances of stretch marks occurring and also darken the stretch marks. Therefore, it is advised to rub creams to reduce the itching rather than scratching the itchy areas.

Exercises and massages
Regularly exercising the skin by massaging it can keep it free from toxins and keep it healthy and supple. This will also help in increasing the elasticity of the skin and toning it.

Hydration
During pregnancy it is required that the woman drinks plenty of water. The water ingested by the body prevents the dehydration of the skin and thus increases its elasticity. This reduces the possibility of the woman developing stretch marks.

Nutrition
A healthy body and healthy skin go hand in hand. A well balanced nutrient rich diet is mandatory for maintaining proper body weight. Rapid gaining of weight is a major reason for stretch marks and this should be combated. Vitamin A, E and C are essential for the body to maintain the smoothness and suppleness of the skin and must be strictly included in the diet.

It is more advisable to prevent the occurrence of stretch marks than to resort to various medical and surgical treatments after they have developed because once they have come up you cannot completely make them invisible, they can just be lightened. Following these simple measures will result in a smooth and mark free body you can always take pride on.
