Slip and fall accidents are some of the most common personal injury accidents. Any personal injury lawyer can attest that these types of accidents occur more commonly than almost any other. Most of the time, the cause of a slip and fall accident is the result of negligence on the part of a home or business owner. Most slip and fall accidents can be easily avoided with a little care and foresight.

Common injuries resulting from these types of accidents include broken bones, sprained ankles and wrists, concussions or more serious injuries like broken backs and paralysis. No one wants to experience a severe injury resulting from a fall. Listed below are some of the most common slip and fall accidents and simple ways that they can be prevented.

Wet/Slippery Floor
One of the most common slip and fall accidents and one of the most easily preventable is a wet or slippery floor. In most cases, it can be hard to tell that a floor is damp or has a slippery substance on it, causing a person to inadvertently walk over the dangerous area and slip. Routing maintenance can easily avoid this situation. Also if you notice a slippery area in a business or residential area, notifying the proper person can take care of the situation and avoid danger for someone else.

Stairs
Stairways can be dangerous places if not maintained and lit properly. Slips and falls from stair areas are common and extremely dangerous. In areas where stairs are slippery by nature like concrete or metal stairways, it is possible to get anti slip materials to attach to the stairs in order to avoid slips. In bad weather conditions like snow, consistent shoveling and salting of the stairs can help avoid serious injury. Stairways that are poorly lit are another common cause of falls. The simple fix for this problem is making sure all lights are working properly or installing new lights if needed.

Uneven Floors or Walkways
Another common cause of slip and fall accidents is an uneven floor and walkway. Cracks in paving stones, sudden dips and rises in the flooring material, potholes, and rugs and carpets that have become rolled or uneven are all causes of this type of accident. Business and home owners should constantly make sure that public walkways and access points are free from these types of problems. Repairs should always be made when the uneven surface could result in a serious accident.
