There are some people who feel as if exercising at night is better than working out in the morning. However, there isn t really any truth to this either way. For instance, I had always heard that it is better to exercise in the morning because this is when your body is more apt to burn the most energy, thereby, helping you to lose more weight.
The theory with this is that when you work out in the morning, you haven t had anything to eat yet. Therefore, when you start to work out, the energy that you are burning is being used from fat that is in your body. When you choose to work out later in the day, though, you have no doubt already eaten something. Therefore, your body is focused on trying to use energy to break down the food in your body; and any energy that you are exerting through exercise really isn t going towards burning calories nearly as much as it would have been on an empty stomach.
The other rumor about exercising at night is that it keeps you up at night. This actually may be true. You see, when you exercise at night, you are getting your heart rate up in order to burn more calories. Therefore, if you have just finished exercising, your body is still revved up. My recommendation as a former collegiate athlete? If you are going to work out at night, make sure that you give yourself at least a couple of hours to wind down from whatever it is that you just did. Remember, even after you have finished exercising, depending on the intensity of what you were doing, your body is going to continue to burn calories for a few hours after you have completed your workout routine. Obviously, you wouldn t want to go for a ten mile run at 7 minute mile pace, walk in the door to your apartment and then go right to bed after you had taken a shower.
You have to be smart when you exercise. Another reason why many people don t advocate exercising at night is in reference to those of us who insist on going for a run or walk outdoors. At night, it is much more difficult to see where you are going; and this leaves you with all sorts of opportunity to trip over something in the street or on the sidewalk. Additionally, you make yourself an easier target for people who are up to no good and may try to mug you or hurt you. You can also put yourself, often unintentionally, into a situation where it becomes difficult for motorists to see you, which could potentially cause a traffic accident.
In the mornings, depending on what time you exercise, it is usually lighter outside and the visibility is often better. Additionally, exercising first thing in the morning is a great way to wake up and start your day feeling fresh. There have been studies that show that those people who exercise first thing in the morning often continue throughout the rest of their day with healthier eating habits, etc. So, whatever you choose, just make sure that you are being safe and putting your body s health first!
