First of all let me say that the title of this article may soon be dated because there are a lot of rumors that that the Kindle DX will soon have the same global wireless capability that the Kindle with Global Wireless already has. But as of now this decision between the larger DX and the smaller regular Kindle is one that only those living the US get to make (as those outside of the US only have access to the smaller one.)
Secondly let me say that there are really a lot more similarities between these two gadgets than there are differences. I ll get to the many similarities below after first discussing the differences (as it s the differences that are most important because they ll help to decide which one is right for your needs.)
The most obvious difference is that one only works in the US while the other works in countries around the world. If you live outside the US (or if you re an American who often travels to other countries) then that makes your choice (such as it is) obvious; You must choose the Global Kindle.
Besides that, the biggest difference is that of size. The DX is bigger both as far it s display and it s memory capabilities. It s also much bigger as far as it s price is concerned (as of now the DX costs more than $200 more than the Global Kindle.)
While the DX is 9.7 inches, the Kindle with Global Wireless is just 6 inches. The bigger display is particularly helpful with newspaper subscriptions (it makes it more like reading a real paper.) On the flip side, the smaller size of the smaller version can make it easier to carry around with you.
There s also a big difference as far as memory. The DX can hold up to 3,500 books while the smaller version can hold up to 1,500 books. Although, who has more than 1,500 books?! Honestly, I have a hard time imagining this extra space to be necessary for the vast majority of people.
Another difference is that the DX has an auto rotating screen so that if you flip the gadget on it s side the screen automatically adjusts itself to be read horizontally (and automatically adjusts itself to be read vertically when you flip it back.) The DX also has a built in PDF reader that the smaller version does not have.
What about the similarities?
They both have access to approximately 400,000 books, newspapers, and magazines which can all be purchased for lower prices than their paperback alternatives. These books can all be downloaded within just 60 seconds from anywhere (they have G3 wireless so there s no need to search for wi fi spots.)
They both have a built in text to speech program which can turn any book into an audio book. Yes, your Kindle will read to you!
Neither of these gadgets have any monthly charges to worry about. The wireless service is provided a lot like the wireless service for GPS navigational systems. Once you get the gadget the wireless just works, there s nothing else to worry about and no bills to pay.
They both have a very basic built in web browswer that lets you surf the web from anywhere. It should be noted that this web browswer is meant for text based sites such as Wikipedia and blogs. It s not for pictures or videos.
They both have a no glare display that reads like paper. If you re worried that reading this will be like reading your computer screen then don t be! It s not like that at all.
