When Sonic the Hedgehog comic series where first released in 1993 by Archie Comics, they were mostly isolated stories more than anything else. The story line was nearly never continuous and almost always was confined to a single issue. New characters like Super Sonic, Knuckles, and Bunnie Rabbot were constantly introduced and would later go on to become popular as well as major characters as the series went on. The first issues mostly featured the battles between Sonic and his archenemy Dr. Robotnik and every time Sonic would succeed in foiling Robotnik’s devious plans, from stopping the destruction of a forest upto protecting the location of the Knothole Village.
Eventually, the issues matured and a sense of a continuous plot was developed, this was evident from the beginning of the Mecha Sonic story arc from issue #39, in this storyline Sonic is converted into a robot and begins listening to and obeys Robotnik’s commands. This plot line would later be concluded in a Sonic the Hedgehog Special issue where Knuckles surrenders in order to be transformed into another robot, to defeat the now robotic Sonic. From this story arc onwards, the story lines and arcs would develop and further mature into the presently seen fully continuous one. The next story arc brought the loyalty of a most of the so called Freedom Fighters into question; particularly notable was the feud between Geoffrey St. John, from Acorn Secret Service and Sonic the Hedgehog. This continued till the renowned and widely popular EndGame saga which took place over a four issues.
The legendary EndGame saga began with a mission by the Wolf Pack (with Lupe as their leader) and the Freedom Fighters, to launch an attack on Robotnik’s base. While Princess Sally revealed that it would soon be apparent to everyone that, Sonic the Hedgehog is a traitor. Much to all of their surprise, during the mission Sonic allows Sally to fall to her death. After all this as everyone retreats back to the Knothole Village and Sonic was last seen battling Robotnik inside his base (where he left Sally to die). Ultimately the story progresses very well to the climax and at the very last end Sally is revived by Sonic with a kiss.
After the successful debut of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series is still running successfully till date with 204 total issues and 8 single special issues. Predominantly the writing is undertaken by Ian Flynn, with Mike Pellerito and Victor Gorelick as editors. The success of the series has predominantly been attributed to the long running success of the game series, especially for the hand held consoles starting from the GameBoy original to even the Nintendo DS of today. The games are also very successful on other platforms with children aging from 6 to 12 years. Comic experts have been overly critical over 1 2 issues but mostly have agreed on the fact that the series is a success and will remain a hit if the integrity of the storylines is preserved.
