Many employees underestimate their worth because in truth, they have no idea what they are worth to the particular company or industry that they are working for. Especially in today s economic conditions, many people are quite content to stay put where they are if they currently have a job because quite frankly, having a job is better than not having a job at all. However, is this really the correct way to be thinking? Is the economy always going to be in the dumps? Are we all going to be stuck with the jobs that we currently have forever? These are things to constantly be thinking of to keep you on your toes for the day when conditions change so that you don t get stuck in a rut. Even if you are content in your current job and want to see it through all the way until the very end, there is no reason for you to become complacent and simply accept your lot in life.
In the United States, years ago, when the workforce first started thriving here, the economy and jobs was based off of the theory of survival of the fittest, in which you work hard to get ahead and make the most of yourself and your lot. If you played your cards right and were smart about the financial decisions that you made, then you had the chance to advance up the social/financial ladder. Those who were not smart, would end up on the bottom. Today, while many things has changed, this notion of survival of the fittest, is still an undercurrent in our economy, giving hope to those who are currently at the bottom that they may, too, rise up and surpass their predecessors to become successful in their own lives. That being said, part of this notion also requires you to know what your worth is and to not only know what your worth is, but to believe it and have confidence in your skills and ability.
The Internet has opened up such a wide pool of information, that you can now go online and look up information on what the national average is for someone in your line of work with the amount of experience that you have. Of course, you will want to get several different opinions on expected wages from various reputable websites; but after you do this, make sure that you are constantly updating your resume and glancing it over every now and then if for nothing else but to remind yourself of all of the experience that you have. What makes you more marketable to one company versus another? What qualifications and experience do you bring with you that others don t have? These and other questions are things to seriously consider when thinking about your own self worth. After all, how can you ask your boss for a raise if you aren t even sure what you are supposed to be getting paid to begin with? Figure this part out, and the rest will be easy.
