The diner is as much a part of the American experience as baseball and the SUV. Sure, they serve up more grease than a mechanic shop, but there’s nothing quite like the comfort of pulling up a chair at a classic diner after a long drive.

So grab yourself a napkin or two and come along with us as we explore 7 American Diners To Eat At Before You Die. That is unless of course, eating there kills you first.

1. Hillbilly Hot Dogs: Lesage, WV

Straight out of a trailer park cliché, this West Virginia hot dog joint is all about down to earth people, serving down to earth food. Husband and wife team Sonny and Sharie (not to be confused with Sonny and Cher) man the grill, bringing you some of the tastiest dogs you’ve ever sunk your teeth into.

Go big or go home we say. Order up the “Junk Yard Dog”, an all dressed weenie, loaded with homemade chile sauce, mustard, onions, relish, slaw, kraut, jalapenos, BBQ sauce and finger licking good nacho cheese.

For the truly adventurous there’s the 15” “Home Wrecker” hot dog. Take down this beast in 12 minutes or less, and you’ll leave with a free Hillbilly Hotdogs t shirt (not to mention a few extra pounds on your frame).

2. Mac & Ernie’s Roadside Eatery: Tarpley, Texas

Nothing more than a wood shack perched in a small town parking lot, you probably wouldn’t think twice about driving by this South Texas eatery. That is until you try the food.

Walk up to the order window, make your selection and let Chef Naylene bring her culinary masterpieces to life. Choose from crunchy Taco’s, grilled pork tenderloin, or even swordfish brushed with capers and olive butter. You won’t believe that food this good, could come out of the tiny 10’ X 16’ kitchen.

For the burger lover, Mac & Ernie’s Cabrito burger is a can’t miss hit. Folks come from miles out to enjoy the juicy ranch raised beef, topped with Bermuda onions on a fresh baked roll. Gastronomic simplicity at its best.

3. Eveready Diner: Hyde Park, NY

About the only thing bigger than the menu at the Eveready Diner is the mammoth portions they serve up. Roll in at anytime and you’ll be welcomed by the salivating aroma of fresh baking bread, cakes and old fashioned pies. Everything here is made from scratch. Heck, even the apples in the apple pie are grown in the orchard out back.

For breakfast go with the corned beef hash, or the Chevy Nova omelet, 3 eggs loaded with Nova Scotia lox and onions. If you’re in for lunch or dinner, order up the to die for chicken parm, then cut through the grease with a triple scoop chocolate milk shake. Go ahead, slurp it up as loud as you wish.

4. Frank’s Diner: Kenosha, WI

Locals call this lunch car diner a historic landmark; and once you sample the food, you’ll be putting it up there with Mt. Rushmore and the Washington Monument too. Yes, it’s simply that good.

Breakfast is king at Frank’s; with the mammoth pancakes, fresh baked bread and hearty omelettes exerting rule over the menu. And If there is a king amongst kings to be named, Frank’s famous “Garbage Plates” certainly take the title: 5 Eggs, grilled up with hash browns, cheese, ham, bacon and sausage. Put simply, royal treatment on a plate.

5. Baby Blues BBQ: Venice, CA

Grab yourself a bib and get set for authentic Southern cooking, in the heart of California. This is quite simply the tastiest soul food you’ll find west of the Mississippi, y’all.

Dig into the fall off the bone Memphis style ribs, savour a slow smoked pork sandwich or just enjoy the nearly endless selection of classic Southern sides. Baked beans, collared greens, sweet potatoes, fresh cornbread and all the other usual suspects are here and are all delicious. About the only piece of the South missing from here is General Robert E. Lee.

6. Triple XXX Family Restaurant: West Lafayette, Ind

Don’t let the Triple XXX name fool you, this Hoosier state burger house serves up grub appropriate for any audience. Take 1/3 LB of 100 fresh ground sirloin, top with melted cheddar cheese and fresh grilled onions, throw it on a toasted sesame seed roll and you’ve got yourself one of America’s tastiest meals between two buns.

Enjoy with Triple XXX’s own homemade potato salad or hearty made from scratch chile, then finish things off with an old fashioned root beer float. De licous.

7. Chef Point Café: Watauga, Texas

Chef Point

Part gas station, part diner, the motto here is fill’er up outside, fill’er up inside.

Once you’ve toped up your tank, take a seat at a table and brace yourself for one of the greatest adventures your tastebuds have ever seen. From freshly prepared pastas to drool worthy burgers, Chef Point’s got you covered. Seafood is the star here, with the Blackened catfish, perfectly crisp crab cakes and succulent lobster bisque (complete with hand made bread bowl) stealing the show.

If you’re still running close to empty (we highly doubt it), fill yourself to the brim with a gallon or two of the home made bread pudding in hot cognac sauce. We guarantee you won’t need to eat again for miles.

Got an “American diner to eat at before you die” of your own? Go ahead, share it with us, we’re always hungry for more.
