I have an older car. It gives me little trouble and when I do need to repair it, I replace its parts with used auto parts. The car is more than ten years old and probably does not have another ten in it, but it gets me to and from the places I need to go. I have learned to listen to the car as I am driving it to hear if something is amiss in it.
The tires make a noise that changes as they need replacement or become unaligned. The song of the engine goes out of tune if the belts and fluids need to be checked. I do not do my own auto repairs, relying instead on a friend who has a natural ability to fix problems with cars. This car is small, but simple, an easy fix normally.
I noticed that the transmission wasn't shifting right from first to second year a while ago. It just didn't quite make it until you needed to be in third gear. This alerted my to the need for a transmission replacement. I opted for a used transmission that had been rebuilt for reasons of economy, it was almost half the price of a brand new one. When your car has more than one hundred thousand miles on it, why buy a new part? The transmission was replaced and I was happy to have saved some money.
I have driven the car for another hundred thousand miles now and am very happy for the economy and reliability of that used transmission. If I needed to replace it now, I might look in New Haven or Southington for a used auto parts dealer I could trust. I might have to even sell that car to a used auto parts dealer someday when I can no longer get the sounds fixed that I hear from the engine.
The car runs well now, it just needs an alignment and some cleaner on the inside glass from all the smudges my children have put on the windows. It has provided safety and reliable transport for my family for more than ten years now. We have driven it through mountains, valleys and plains, across rivers and lakes on bridges and through many storms. It has been a good car for us and I am not looking forward to parting ways with it. The car seems like a member of the family now.
