Have you ever had a blow out, or had your car break down on the freeway in Orange County? If it did happen, was it during rush hour? Something like that could be at the center of a good horror movie, "I'm broken down in rush hour and can't get out!" Whenever I see someone trying to swap out their tire on the freeway, I involuntarily cringe, thinking about what could happen should a careless driver speed in too close. With regards to tires and automobile maintenance, I take the same approach as Chinese herbal medicine, that it is better to prevent than it is to repair.
Zen really does have a lot to do with the art of automobile maintenance. You need to be aware of what is going on with your car. Know what it sounds like when it is in good form, and be conscious of changes in the way it sounds or rides. A lot of people shrug things off, thinking that they aren't a big deal, or that they still have some rubber on the tires, even if the tread is gone, so they can last a little longer.
These folks usually get things taken care of once the tire blows or the engine seizes up, when repairs are at their least convenience and greatest cost. How much trouble could have been avoided if careful maintenance and periodic repair of minor problems had been part of the driver's meditation?
Consider this. You notice that you have some worn tread on the tires, and the wire is starting to show a little. You figure that it's no big deal and proceed to get on the highway, oh, I don't know, anywhere in Orange County. You drive for a while and get into the thick of traffic, only to have a small nail find the sweet spot on your balding tire. You get a flat and have to edge your car from the middle lane all the way over to the side while your wheel starts to grind on the asphalt. Luckily, you avoid being hit by the cars that were honking and swerving to avoid you, but by the time you are able to stop and look at the tire, your rim is ground up and bent.
Not only will you have to replace the tire, now thoroughly shredded and laying in tatters on the road, but you will have to buy a new wheel. Your costs just doubled, and in the process you endangered yourself and everyone else on the freeway. Now, not only are you going to be late for wherever you were headed, several other people are trying to come down from road rage, and you know drivers in Orange County. They can be a little nuts.
So take a word of advice and have your tires checked and your car repairs done in a timely manner.
