For owners of the Golden Retriever dog breed, breeding these dogs for the first time is a very difficult task. Breeding dogs can be rather complex, but it can also be simple once you know the ropes. First time breeders should be quite familiar with specifications and requirements for breeding, otherwise they will be performing an unfair procedure for potential dog owners who will not be getting what they paid for. Anyone looking around to acquire a Golden Retriever puppy will want top quality for his money, first time breeders should be advised not to engage in this practice simply with the purpose of making a quick dollar.

For those who wish to entertain the idea of breeding dogs as a hobby, consider this activity to be more than a hobby, or a business. Make an effort to learn about the subject, learn the ropes somewhere, visit the library and become acquainted with the facts. Also consider that there will be some monetary implications, and a great deal of time will need to be put aside to be dedicated to this project. It is important that novice breeders become conscious of the responsibility involved in breeding. By no means do we wish to encourage people to breed mediocre animals that may probably end up in the street, or cause the novice breeder any legal problems.

Instinctual needs of a Golden Retriever dog are fulfilled by breeding, even if it is something they have never done. They will have no regrets and won’t miss it if they never engage in breeding activity. A female retriever will not be any healthier because she underwent pregnancy, however, pregnancy may affect her health negatively, although not necessarily. Many dog owners who suddenly decide to breed their dogs are not even aware that they own a spayed female. If your dog has been spayed, it cannot breed, ever..

The first steps in the breeding process involve some decision making. The breeder must consider the dogs who will mate. The overall health, physical and personal traits of the parents will determine the outcome in the litter. Breeders want to be extra careful when selecting the parents, since these will either improve the lineage of their litter, or act in retrograde.

Some obstacles may present themselves, such as the female being unwilling or unable to feed it’s young. In such case it be the responsibility of the breeder to step in and assist with the feeding of the young puppies. The breeder must be ready to spend quite a deal of time at this task, if it so happens. The success of the feeding process is imperative for the well being of the pack.

As far as money goes, there are considerable expenses to be made. Cost of food, pet care, veterinarian bills and vaccinations pile up. Eventually, you will notice that quality and respected breeders don’t make that much money at all. Many breeders just do it as a hobby, and are not pursuing a profit as their first priority.

Breeding Golden Retrievers can be a lot of fun if done responsibly. Considering the time and expense involved in this kind of activity, it is something only real dog lovers will enjoy.
