If you have ever had a family member live with you then you know how difficult it can be to share your home with somebody else. This is especially true if you have children living in the home as well. In many cases the family member begins to feel like they have a say in your home and that is not always a good thing. It can often feel like that person is intruding into your families personal affairs, the individual may begin to cause inconvenience due to sharing areas of your home that get the most use, the individual may have different ideas of dealing with children and may begin to overstep their boundaries. Any number of things can cause unrest in a home that is shared with someone outside of the immediate family. But this does not mean that you should have to live any other way in your home than you always have, you just have to be able and willing to set some ground rules so that you are not taken advantage of rather it be inadvertently or intentionally.

The first rule that should be set when a family member outside of the immediate family moves into your home is not to interfere with yours and your spouses parenting. This can be a difficult subject to approach because the first thing you have to do is decide what is considering overstepping your boundaries. If your child is doing something wrong that may hurt them then of course you wan something to be said if you are not close by but how to go about reprimand or discipline should be consistent with your style. Make it clear to the individual that you do things a certain way in your home and that you expect things to continue to be carried out that way. If the family member can t handle that then they should not reprimand or discipline your child at all because once you lose that consistency you will lose control of your household very quickly.

Next you should be sure to clarify any important household rules to a family member moving into your home. We all know that children learn by example and that includes learning from those outside of the immediate family as well. If a particular rule or way of doing things is important to you then that should be made perfectly clear, even the most trivial rules if you really want your household to fun the way it always has.

Finally, you should continue to carry out any normal family routines that you have always carried out before. Children need not get lost in the mix or they will eventually start to act out and likely it will not be in a good way. Continue to make your children feel important by still having family time on a regular basis.

Everybody is different and living with people much different than yourself can be difficult but not impossible. Just make sure that that individual knows how you do things in your home and everybody will be much happier in the end.
