The travel nurse is a special kind of nurse who can experience both professional growth while indulging his or her wanderlust. It can be a very satisfying career, actually, if you are the type who cannot bear being stuck in one place for a very long time. A boring nine-to-five job is not for you, such as working in the office wearing the same boring office attire week after week, and well, along that line of thinking, a boring eight- or twelve-hour shift in the hospital wearing the same boring pristine white uniform or scrub suit every single day can be just as wearisome. But if you have the passion to serve in the field of healthcare, then being a travel nurse is the perfect compromise.

You can be a travel nurse by applying at hospitals who are hiring directly for the post, or you can go through a nursing recruiter. It is advisable that you proceed with the latter as you will be provided by your recruiter with the best job opportunities possible along with relocation assistance (if it is not yet provided by the hospital where you will be placed), and even assistance in securing a temporary license for your state, if required. This, however, will come for a reasonable fee, of course. Now if you go with the former-applying directly at hospitals-and your medical institution provides relocation assistance or housing subsidy, then your salary gets deducted for those as well. But you don't have to worry because you should still get a higher than average hourly wage, although this naturally will still depend on your experience, location, and specialty, if any.

Your knowledge and skills as a travel nurse will be honed well because of the many possible locations and departments you may be brought to. You may get to work in a pediatric unit in a hospital in the East Coast with not much equipment, and so you will learn to be very resourceful in dealing with sensitive patient cases. You may get to work in a very sophisticated intensive care unit in New York and so get the training required for only the best in high-tech life support system equipment. You may get to work in the emergency room in a suburb in California where your alertness and speed will be tested to be able to deal with both trauma and non-trauma cases. If you do all that in a year, then you would have already gained the experience a regular medical/surgical ward nurse can only dream of in his or her day-to-day hospital routine. If this all sounds good to you, then why don't you give it a try? Being a travel nurse may just be the career for you.
