Having an interest in making your own homemade biodiesel is a common interest these days. The cost of gas has been increasing steadily over the past couple years and continues to grow.

Making your own biodiesel at home can help save money. The main ingredient that you will need to make biodiesel at home would be vegetable oil. Maybe you are wondering how you would be able to get that much vegetable oil to be able to make gas for your car.

One way to get vegetable oil is to check with your local restaurants. Many times these local restaurants have massive amounts of used cooking oil. Restaurants have to pay to discard of this cooking oil and would be happy to give it away.

Talk to your local restaurants and ask if they would be willing to let you take the oil off their hands for free. This is a great way to get the main ingredient free and in large quantities.

What else do you need? When making your homemade biodiesel you will need methanol, lye, plastic buckets, paint mixer and strainers. Another item you are going to need to invest in is a large steel pot to heat the oil. The pot would need to be large enough to fit 15 liters of vegetable oil plus room for additional ingredients.

This type of pot can be purchased cheaply at a local thrift store. Methanol is highly flammable and can be dangerous to work with. Methanol is one of the main ingredients in making biodiesel. Make sure to use a respirator and rubber gloves when working with Methanol. The amount of Methanol needed to make a complete batch in 2.6 liters.

Lye can be purchased at your local hardware store and is a main ingredient. Use caution when handling lye, it can cause severe burns. Safety precautions such as eye protection and gloves are a must when working with lye. To make a complete batch of fuel, you will need 53 grams of lye.

Plastic buckets and paint mixers can be purchased at your local hardware store. These you will need to complete the process. A good strainer is also needed to complete the fuel making process. These are a few things to get started in making your own biodiesel at home.
