Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid that occur in the ovary. Most of the time they are harmless. They are quite common and are often a range of sizes. An ovarian cyst during pregnancy worries many women because it can cause bleeding. Also large cysts can be painful, and cause swelling. Some ovarian cysts can even cause miscarriage. During a pregnancy all of these symptoms are frightening.
Many ovarian cysts occur as part of the natural childbearing cycle. During a pregnancy an egg is released and fertilized. For some women multiple eggs are produced, but only one is fertilized. Many times the additional egg will develop into an ovarian cyst. These cysts are considered functional as they are a natural part of the cycle. Functional cysts typically dissolve on their own in a few months.
Cysts that are not functional can grow into a bigger problem. Larger ovarian cysts can rupture or twist in the uterus. Often these larger cysts cause extreme pain, mostly from the twisting. Other times, these larger cysts rupture also causing complications. Pregnancies with these kind of cysts can end in miscarriage.
Ovarian cysts are also a concern because of the connection to cancer. Ovarian cancer can be a fatal disease. It is very rare for an ovarian cysts during pregnancy to become cancer. Because of this fact most pregnant women need not worry. However, persistent ovarian cysts should be checked by a doctor.
Ovarian cysts can be very serious, but are not hard to find. Nowadays, a doctor can easily determine the size, location, and type of cyst. With an ultrasound or sonogram the doctor can also determine if it is cancerous.
An ovarian cyst that can rupture, twist or is cancerous requires special attention. A doctor would be able to decide if surgery should be used to remove it. Surgery is not always necessary however. Sometimes even the most painful ovarian cyst goes away on its own.
