One of the most popular forms of entertainment these days is to watch movies. There are motion pictures available that entertain, educate and arouse creative thinking for just about any subject. The largest player in the movie industry would be Hollywood, based in California.
India's Bollywood is the second largest film industry, followed by Nollywood. Each of these film industries produces videos in all different genres including drama, romance and comedy.
Nollywood may come in third on the pay scale; however, this should not diminish the incredible industry that it is. It is a Nigerian film industry that promotes many African motion pictures. The need for entertainment in this industry has launched them into a $250 million dollar per year industry.
Interestingly enough, it has only taken Nollywood a little more than a decade to grow from non-existent to the third largest film industry in the world.
To date, the industry produces anywhere from 500 to 1,000 movies a year. Unlike Hollywood where they spend millions on one motion picture, Nollywood has a much small budget. The average production only costs about $15,000 to create.
This means there is very little room for special effects and explosions. Instead, the movie themes greatly rely upon acting and story lines for their entertainment value.
A typical movie that is created in Hollywood may take anywhere from nine months to a year and a half to complete. Nollywood pictures take just ten days on average. Although each film from Africa or Nigeria takes very little time and resources to complete, they still provide an entertainment value that makes Nollywood what it is today.
The need to produce movies for home viewing came about due to the rising crime rates in African cities. Because residents of these areas were becoming more and more afraid to come out after dark, the need for in-home entertainment grew. Even for those who were brave enough to face the dark streets after daylight had faded were discouraged to find that movie theaters had closed by dusk. This meant that the need for relevant entertainment continued to grow.
After all, films based in Hollywood and Bollywood did not necessarily resonate with the local cultures in these African cities. That is why as Nollywood has continued to grow these last 13 years, they have bloomed into an incredible multi-million dollar industry.
