If you have ever been advised by friends that you have a distinguished voice, then you may have thought of making use of that great voice in a professional way, as a singer, announcer or as a voice over talent. Adding your voice to a recorded message, such as a radio advertisement is called "voice over" - and can be an exciting and rewarding career for a trained individual. If you are interested in acquiring the training needed to become a successful voice over actor, there are certain steps you will want to take.

Even if you are not gifted with a classic speaking voice, you can still be welcomed in to the voice over business if you have the drive and voice acting ability.

A voice over career is a fulfilling and demanding occupation where no two work weeks are ever the same. It is an occupation that many people would admit to enjoying. Yet it is a profession that demands much studying, instruction and training to become involved in. The best voice over actors make their job look simple - so simple that any person selected off the street could perform it. This is certainly not the case. If you wish to begin a professional career as a voice over actor, there are several steps one must first take.

Listed below are four important steps to take.

1. Enroll in an Acting Class. If you live in an metropolitan area, it should be easy to find a suitable acting class. Find a course and enroll in it. You may ask, "Why acting classes?" You will need the ability to create characters who "perform" within a commercial spot. Just taking an animation class won't do it. You need to start the process organically. At the entry level of your voice over career it is not yet about your voice - it is about the objective of your character within the script.

2. Take a Voice Over Class.Take Voice Over Instruction. After you've opened yourself up for three months in an acting class, time to move into specifics with a voice over class. Check online within your city and you should be able to find a few options and courses to choose from.

3. Start Practicing at Home In addition to your course assignments, pay attention to radio and television commercials as much as you can. Try to copy them. Read magizines aloud as if you were reading ad copy for a commercial assignment. Become used to talking so that silence feels awkward to you.

4. Find Your Niche Once you have a solid handle on your instrument - your voice - you need to know what your range is and, by association, what your market is. Will it be the classic sports car voice, the polished game show voice, or the Joe Six Pack voice? The more characters you can communicate as, the more marketable you will become. Knowing all that you can do will help you with confidence and direction when promoting yourself.

So, start studying, keep practicing, determine where your voice would fit in best - and begin a successful career as a voice actor.
